Anguina funesta is a parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. It is a highly specialized plant pest that primarily infests wheat, causing significant economic losses in agricultural regions worldwide.

This nematode is known for inducing the formation of galls in the seeds of host plants, including common wheat and certain wild grasses. One of the most severe aspects of this infestation is that the nematode acts as a vector for the bacterium Rathayibacter toxicus, which produces toxins capable of causing fatal poisoning in livestock.

The life cycle of the nematode begins when larvae penetrate the young wheat seedlings and migrate to the developing flower primordia. Inside the tissues, they induce the development of galls, which serve as both food sources and protective environments for the nematode to develop into adulthood and survive adverse environmental conditions.

Visual identification of infested plants involves noticing stunted growth and deformed spikes. Upon close inspection, grain heads contain hard, dark galls instead of healthy kernels. These galls can remain viable for several years in the soil or in stored grain, making the pest persistent if not properly managed through sanitation.

Control strategies for Anguina funesta are centered on prevention and sanitation. Key practices include:

  • Using nematode-free certified seeds.
  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants for at least two to three years.
  • Deep plowing to bury infested residues.
  • Using gravity separation or specialized cleaning equipment to remove galls from seed lots.
These measures are essential for reducing the population density of the pest and ensuring the safety of both crop yield and animal feed.
