Description
Systematic position: The grass gall nematode Anguina graminis belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. It is a specialized phytoparasitic nematode that induces the formation of galls on the vegetative and reproductive parts of various grass species.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects perennial grasses, including species of Festuca, Poa, and Agrostis. It is particularly problematic in seed production fields, where infestations can lead to significant economic losses and a decrease in the quality of forage seeds.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is intricately linked to the growth phases of the host plant. Second-stage juveniles penetrate the meristematic tissues of the plant, triggering the development of galls. Within these abnormal structures, the nematodes feed, molt, and reproduce, eventually emerging to infest new host plants or remaining dormant until favorable conditions return.
