Pacific grass nematode

Pacific grass nematode (Anguina pacificae) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Anguinidae, order Tylenchida. It is recognized as a significant pest that primarily impacts grass species. As an obligate parasite, its life cycle is strictly dependent on the host plant, where it utilizes specific tissues for feeding and reproduction.

The primary host for Anguina pacificae is the orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata). The nematode targets the aerial parts of the plant, often colonizing the developing florets. This specificity makes it a particular concern for seed production fields where quality and purity of the harvest are of high economic importance.

The biology of this nematode is characterized by its ability to induce gall formation. The juveniles enter the host during early growth stages, moving within moisture films on the plant surface. Once they reach the floral primordia, they initiate physiological changes in the host cells, leading to the development of galls—distorted structures that replace healthy seeds and provide a protected environment for the nematodes to mature and multiply.

The damage caused by these nematodes is primarily observed as the deformation of flower heads and the replacement of seeds with nematode-filled galls. This directly reduces seed yield and viability. Furthermore, the presence of these pests weakens the overall plant vigor, making the crop more susceptible to environmental stresses and secondary pathogens that exploit the damaged plant tissue.

Management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation. Growers are advised to avoid sowing contaminated seeds by using only certified, gall-free stock. Crop rotation is essential to break the life cycle of the nematode, and deep plowing helps bury the infested plant debris, preventing the survival of juveniles in the soil. Regular monitoring of grass stands during the growing season is critical for early detection and mitigation.
