Description

The wheat seed gall nematode (Anguina tritici) is a member of the order Tylenchida and the family Anguinidae. It is a highly specialized plant-parasitic nematode that specifically targets cereal crops, leading to the transformation of healthy grains into pathological structures known as galls.

This pest primarily infests common wheat and durum wheat, although rye can also serve as a host. The nematode is globally distributed in various temperate climatic zones and represents a significant economic threat to agricultural productivity in areas where seed cleaning practices are neglected.

The life cycle of Anguina tritici is perfectly synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Second-stage juveniles, which remain dormant within the dried galls, are activated by moisture during germination. They migrate towards the growing points of the plant, where they enter the developing leaf tissue and are transported to the inflorescence.

Feeding by the nematodes induces the formation of dark, hard galls that replace the normal grains within the wheat spike. Symptoms often include stunted growth, twisted leaves, and the presence of abnormally shaped, flared glumes on the infected spikes. The weight of the harvest is significantly reduced, and the grain quality is compromised by these nematode-filled galls.

Management strategies for this nematode focus primarily on prevention. Because post-emergence control is not feasible, farmers must utilize mechanical seed cleaning to remove galls, practice crop rotation to starve the nematode population in the soil, and implement deep tillage to bury infected plant residues. Strict phytosanitary control of seeds remains the most effective defense against this pest.
