Pacific termite

The Pacific termite (lat. Anoplotermes pacificus) is a member of the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. As a soil-dwelling insect, this species acts as a significant pest in various agricultural and forest ecosystems, particularly where moisture conditions facilitate its subterranean movement and feeding activities.

The pest poses a threat to several crops, including maize, sugarcane, and various tree seedlings. While their primary diet consists of decaying organic matter, high population densities or localized environmental stress may lead these termites to feed on the living root systems and underground stems of healthy plants, resulting in severe crop vigor reduction.

The biology of Anoplotermes pacificus is characterized by a subterranean lifestyle, as they do not construct conspicuous above-ground mounds. Their colony structure is highly organized, consisting of specialized castes such as workers, soldiers, and reproductives, which cooperate to maintain extensive galleries within the soil profile, ensuring the colony's survival and expansion.

Damage caused by these termites is often insidious, as it occurs beneath the soil surface. By feeding on root tissue, they disrupt nutrient and water uptake, often inviting secondary bacterial or fungal infections that lead to plant wilting and death. Damage is particularly acute during dry spells when standard organic soil matter is unavailable, forcing the termites to attack cultivated crops.

Protection and control strategies must be integrated. Effective measures include:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the termite life cycle.
• Deep tillage to destroy subsoil galleries and reduce colony stability.
• Applying systemic or contact soil-incorporated insecticides.
• Regular monitoring using bait stations to detect colony presence early.

Proactive management of the soil environment and early detection are essential to prevent significant yield losses, especially in regions where Anoplotermes pacificus is endemic and highly active.
