Antestiopsis

Antestiopsis is a genus of bugs in the family Pentatomidae, widely recognized as a serious pest of coffee trees, particularly in East Africa. Commonly referred to as the "variegated coffee bug," these insects are well-adapted to the environments where coffee is grown, and their presence can lead to significant yield losses in commercial plantations if left uncontrolled.

The primary hosts of this insect are Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora. Both adults and nymphs feed by inserting their stylets into young berries, flower buds, and succulent shoots. By extracting plant sap, they weaken the coffee tree, but the most severe damage is caused to the fruit, leading to poor bean development and structural damage.

The life cycle of the Antestiopsis bug involves egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in small clusters on the underside of coffee leaves. Under favorable conditions, the entire life cycle is relatively short, allowing for multiple generations per year, which leads to rapid population spikes during the peak growing season of the coffee crop.

The damage is two-fold: direct physical injury and the facilitation of fungal infections. The bug acts as a vector for the fungus Nematospora coryli. When the insect feeds, the spores are introduced into the bean, causing the characteristic "stigmatomycosis." This results in blackened, necrotic tissue inside the coffee bean, rendering it worthless for high-quality beverage production.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Pruning of coffee trees to maintain optimal airflow and light, which disturbs the pest's habitat.
• Regular monitoring of insect population density to determine the necessity for treatment.
• Application of approved systemic or contact insecticides during the early stages of infestation.
• Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that attack the pest's eggs.
