Antestiopsis clymeneis is a significant insect pest belonging to the Pentatomidae family, commonly known as shield bugs. In the field of agronomy, this species is recognized as a primary threat to coffee cultivation, causing substantial economic losses across various coffee-producing regions in Africa and parts of the tropics.
Systematically, this insect is categorized within the order Hemiptera. Its host range is primarily focused on the genus Coffea, specifically Coffea arabica. As a specialized feeder, it has evolved to exploit the plant's reproductive structures, making it a persistent problem for farmers aiming to produce high-quality yields.
The biology of this pest involves a complex life cycle consisting of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. The duration of each cycle depends heavily on temperature and humidity. Under tropical conditions, the insect undergoes multiple generations annually, leading to overlapping populations that can be very difficult to manage if not detected early.
