Description

The Aphaenogaster genus belongs to the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera. While they are crucial for ecosystem balance and seed dispersal, these ants are frequently identified as agricultural pests. Their foraging behavior leads to significant economic loss when they target sown seeds in field conditions, effectively reducing crop density.

These ants primarily damage cereals, oilseeds, and legumes. The critical period of harm occurs immediately after planting, as the seeds provide a concentrated source of nutrition. During the germination stage, ants penetrate the soil, access the seeds, and either consume them in situ or transport them back to their underground nests, leaving large gaps in the field.
