Description
Systematic position. The Aphaenogaster rudis, commonly known as the rough harvester ant, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These ants are native to North American ecosystems. In an agronomic context, they are recognized for their ecological role, but in managed agricultural settings, they can act as pests that interfere with the development of various plant species.
Crops affected. This species primarily affects vegetable crops, grain seeds, and horticultural plants. Their impact is most noticeable during the planting season, as they are known to gather and store seeds. Additionally, their symbiotic relationship with aphids makes them a threat to a wide range of fruit-bearing trees and ornamental plants, which suffer from the indirect damage caused by excessive aphid populations.
Biology and life cycle. Aphaenogaster rudis ants typically establish colonies in soil, under rocks, or within decomposing woody debris. Their life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are highly adaptable and forage for a variety of food sources, including plant seeds, small insects, and honeydew secreted by sap-sucking pests. Their foraging activity is heavily dependent on soil temperature and humidity.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage caused by these ants is dual-faceted. Primarily, they reduce crop stand density by removing seeds from the soil shortly after sowing. Secondly, their habit of "farming" aphids is highly detrimental to plant health. By protecting aphids from predators, they allow these pests to proliferate, leading to stunted plant growth, leaf curling, and the transmission of plant pathogens that aphids vectors.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.

- Application of sticky physical barriers on tree trunks to stop ants from tending to aphid colonies.
