Froghopper

The froghopper (genus Aphrophora) is a member of the family Aphrophoridae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known to gardeners for the frothy white mass, commonly called "cuckoo spit," that the nymphs produce to protect themselves from predators and desiccation. They are active during the growing season and are found in various horticultural environments.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including ornamentals, fruit trees, and vegetables. Common targets include strawberries, roses, chrysanthemums, and various shrubs. By piercing the plant tissues with their stylets, froghoppers extract vital cell sap, which can significantly weaken the overall health and vigor of the affected vegetation.

The life cycle of the froghopper consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs typically overwinter in plant tissues or soil debris. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin to secrete their characteristic foam. As they mature, they grow into mobile, leaping adults that can easily migrate between different plant species in a garden or field.

Feeding damage manifests as curled, stunted, or yellowing leaves. In some cases, the growth of the shoots is severely inhibited, and flowers may fail to develop properly. Furthermore, constant feeding stresses the plant, making it more susceptible to opportunistic diseases and secondary infestations. Extensive damage is particularly noticeable during hot, dry periods.

Managing a froghopper infestation requires a proactive strategy. Recommended control measures include:

• Regular weeding to reduce favorable habitats for nymphs.
• Washing off the foam and nymphs with a strong spray of water from a garden hose.
• Using insecticidal soaps or neem oil, which are effective against young nymphs with minimal impact on beneficial insects.
• Monitoring plants closely during the spring and early summer when the foam is first observed.
