Description
Systematics and identification. The golden spittlebug (Aphrophora auropilosa) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. As a sap-sucking insect, it is distinguished by the golden, hair-like setae covering its body. These insects are common in temperate regions and are often identified by the peculiar spittle masses produced by the nymphs during their developmental stages.
Host plants and damage symptoms. This pest is a polyphage, affecting a wide variety of ornamental plants, shrubs, and woody perennials. The nymphs feed by extracting plant sap, which leads to stunted growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. The most obvious sign of an infestation is the presence of white, frothy spittle clumps on stems and leaf axils, which serve as protection for the developing nymphs.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Aphrophora auropilosa overwinters in the egg stage, typically deposited within the bark or near plant buds. After hatching in the spring, nymphs begin feeding immediately. They pass through several instars while constantly secreting the characteristic foam. Upon reaching adulthood, the insects emerge as mobile adults capable of flight, continuing to feed on host plants throughout the growing season.
Economic impact. The damage caused by the golden spittlebug can lead to significant physiological stress in the host plants. Heavy infestations lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity due to leaf damage and nutrient depletion. Furthermore, the microenvironment within the spittle mass can promote the growth of opportunistic fungi, causing additional necrotic spots and leaf decay, which drastically lowers the ornamental and commercial value of the crop.
Protection and control measures. Effective management starts with cultural practices, such as removing weeds that serve as alternate hosts and regular pruning of affected foliage. In nurseries or greenhouses, chemical control is often necessary. Using systemic or contact insecticides during the early nymphal stages is the most effective approach. Regularly monitoring for the presence of foam on plants is essential for timely intervention and minimizing the use of broad-spectrum chemical sprays.
