Description
Systematic position. The pine froghopper (Aphrophora corticea) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. This sap-sucking insect is a specialized pest that impacts various coniferous species throughout its geographic range, primarily within temperate forest zones.
Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary hosts include species of the genus Pinus. Both nymphs and adults feed on the sap of young shoots and needles. Typical symptoms of infestation include wilting of the shoots, yellowing of needles, and localized necrotic lesions caused by the insertion of the insect's mouthparts into the plant tissue.
Biology and lifecycle. The species undergoes a hemimetabolous development. Eggs overwinter in the crevices of the tree bark. In spring, nymphs hatch and start producing the characteristic spittle mass, which provides both hydration and protection against predators and environmental stress. By mid-summer, the nymphs transition into winged adults, which are capable of jumping and flying to new host plants.
