The Apterygidia earwig belongs to the order Dermaptera and the family Forficulidae. Unlike many other earwig species, the members of this genus are characterized by the absence of fully developed wings. They are typically recognized by their elongated bodies and the prominent cerci (forceps) at the end of their abdomen, which they use for defense and food handling.

These insects are generalist feeders and act as significant pests in gardens, nurseries, and greenhouses. They consume a variety of plant materials including tender leaves, flower petals, fruits, and vegetable seedlings. They prefer damp and sheltered environments, often hiding in organic mulch, debris, or cracks in the soil during the day.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females demonstrate maternal care, guarding their eggs in soil nests until they hatch. After hatching, the nymphs go through several stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to forage, which often makes their presence go unnoticed until significant damage is already done.

Economic damage caused by Apterygidia is observed through irregular holes in foliage and feeding scars on fruits and blooms. This damage reduces the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and the marketability of fruit crops. Furthermore, their feeding activity can create entry points for pathogens, potentially leading to secondary infections and rot in the plant tissues.
