Systematic position: The Tomis earwig (Forficula tomis) is a member of the order Dermaptera and the family Forficulidae. It is characterized by its nocturnal habits and specialized cerci, which are typical for earwigs. This species is commonly found in temperate regions, often thriving in gardens and agricultural settings.

Target crops and nature of damage: As a polyphagous insect, Forficula tomis attacks a wide variety of plants. It frequently damages ornamental flowers, vegetables (such as cabbage, lettuce, and cucumbers), and soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries. The insects typically chew irregular holes in foliage, consume petals, and bore into fruits, making the produce unsalable.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in soil cracks, mulch, or plant debris. In the spring, females create nesting burrows in the soil and provide maternal care to the eggs and early-stage nymphs. The nymphs pass through several instars before reaching maturity, with usually one generation produced per year in northern regions.

Pest importance: The damage caused by these earwigs is often exacerbated by their preference for moist environments. Because they hide in cool, damp places during the day and feed at night, infestations are often unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Furthermore, their feeding activity creates entry points for fungal pathogens, leading to fruit rot and secondary infections.

Control measures: Effective management of the Tomis earwig involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Reducing habitat by eliminating garden clutter, weed piles, and excess mulch.
• Using trap methods, such as rolled cardboard or moist rags, to collect and destroy the insects during the day.
• Cultivating the soil in late autumn to disrupt overwintering sites.
• Applying appropriate insecticides only when infestations exceed economic thresholds, ensuring compliance with local safety regulations.
