Araeocorynus cumingi is a beetle species classified within the family Anthribidae (fungus weevils) of the order Coleoptera. While many related species are known to inhabit wood or decaying organic matter, this specific pest has evolved to exploit the fruit and seeds of various agricultural crops in tropical environments.
The pest primarily targets economic crops such as coffee, cocoa, and various fruit-bearing trees. Its larvae are internal feeders, meaning they develop inside the fruit or seed, making them highly destructive and difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation.
The lifecycle of the insect is closely synchronized with the development of the host plant. Females deposit eggs in or on the surface of maturing fruit, and the resulting larvae bore inside.
