Pale millipede

The pale millipede (Archiboreoiulus pallidus) is a member of the class Diplopoda, order Julida, and family Julidae. These soil-dwelling invertebrates thrive in damp environments rich in organic matter. As detritivores that have turned into agricultural pests, they occupy a specific niche in the soil ecosystem, often remaining undetected until significant damage occurs.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and beets. In greenhouse conditions, they are known to attack young seedlings, gnawing on tender roots and emerging sprouts. Their feeding activity can be devastating for horticultural crops, especially during cool and wet spring seasons when the seeds are vulnerable.

The life cycle of Archiboreoiulus pallidus consists of several developmental stages characterized by molting. These millipedes prefer stable, moist soil conditions where they can reproduce and feed protected from dehydration. They are sensitive to extreme drying of the upper soil layers, which typically limits their activity and reproductive capacity in arid environments.

The damage caused by this pest involves creating deep holes and channels in tubers and roots. Beyond direct physical destruction, these feeding wounds serve as entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, leading to rotting and necrosis. High infestations often lead to poor germination rates and stunted plant growth, resulting in significant yield losses.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices include crop rotation, proper tillage to disturb their habitat, and the removal of plant debris that provides food and shelter. Avoiding excessive irrigation and the use of well-composted organic matter is essential to discourage their presence. In severe cases, soil-applied insecticides can be used as a targeted control measure.
