Spotted snake millipede

The spotted snake millipede (lat. Blaniulus guttulatus) is a small invertebrate belonging to the order Julida, family Blaniulidae. This pest is characterized by its slender, worm-like body, which ranges from 10 to 15 mm in length. Its appearance is distinguished by a pale, off-white or yellowish color with a prominent series of red-brown spots along the sides of each body segment.

This species is a significant pest of various crops, particularly those with underground edible parts. It commonly attacks root vegetables such as carrots, beets, potatoes, as well as germinating seeds, fragile seedlings, and bulbous flowers. The millipede thrives in damp, humid conditions and is often found in soils high in organic matter, including compost heaps and well-manured vegetable beds.

The biological cycle of the spotted snake millipede is spent entirely within the soil. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the earth. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo multiple molts, progressively adding segments and legs until they reach maturity. Under optimal conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, populations can build up rapidly, leading to severe localized infestations.

Damage is characterized by small, deep, circular pits and irregular channels on the surface of roots, tubers, and bulbs. This tunneling behavior is highly destructive, as it compromises the structural integrity of the plant. Furthermore, these open wounds serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, which frequently cause the entire root system to rot before harvest.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices include avoiding over-irrigation, ensuring proper soil drainage, and removing plant debris that provides food and shelter. Soil preparation, such as thorough turning and liming, can create less favorable conditions for the millipede. In commercial scenarios, targeted soil-applied insecticides or seed treatments may be necessary to protect vulnerable young crops.
