Spotted snake millipede

Blaniulus

Description

Systematic position: The spotted snake millipede (Blaniulus guttulatus) belongs to the class Diplopoda, order Julida, and family Blaniulidae. This small soil-dwelling arthropod is characterized by a slender, cylindrical body, typically 10–20 mm in length. Its most distinguishing feature is the white or yellowish color complemented by a series of distinct red spots along the sides of its body, marking the openings of its repugnatorial glands.

Affected crops: This pest is a generalist feeder that poses a significant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops. It is particularly notorious for damaging root vegetables such as sugar beets, potatoes, carrots, and radishes. Furthermore, it frequently attacks the seeds and young seedlings of vegetable crops, causing significant losses in germination and stand establishment.

Biology and life cycle: The spotted snake millipede thrives in moist environments with abundant organic matter. The life cycle takes place entirely within the soil. Females deposit eggs in clusters within the soil profile, and the emerging juveniles undergo several molts, gradually increasing in size and segment count. They remain active throughout the growing season, preferring sheltered, humid conditions.

Type of damage: The damage is primarily subterranean. The millipedes feed by boring into roots, tubers, and bulbs, creating irregular holes and deep pits. This physical damage reduces the marketability of crops and, more importantly, facilitates the entry of soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary fungal or bacterial rots that can devastate an entire harvest.

Control measures: Management of Blaniulus relies on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include:

  • Cultural control: Deep tillage in autumn to disrupt soil habitats.
  • Sanitation: Removing crop debris and avoiding the application of raw manure.
  • Soil moisture management: Improving drainage to reduce favorable conditions.
  • Chemical control: Utilizing registered soil insecticides only when monitoring confirms economic injury levels are exceeded.
