The Wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) is a prominent member of the orb-weaver family (Araneidae) within the order Araneae. While often perceived as a nuisance due to their size and webs, they are biologically categorized as predators rather than plant pests, as they derive no nutrition from plant matter.
From an agronomic perspective, the wasp spider acts as a generalist predator. It feeds on a variety of insects, including flies, grasshoppers, and other arthropods that get entangled in its orb-web. Because they consume various insects, they contribute to the natural biological control of insect populations within agricultural landscapes.
The life cycle of the wasp spider is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Mating occurs in late summer, followed by the female depositing eggs into distinctive, flask-shaped cocoons attached to vegetation. These cocoons provide thermal protection, allowing the eggs to survive through winter before emerging as spiderlings in the spring.
The damage caused by Argiope bruennichi is negligible to crop health. They do not feed on plant tissues, stems, or leaves. The only potential concern for growers is the physical presence of extensive webs on low-growing crops or nursery stock, which might impede manual harvesting operations or create aesthetic issues for ornamental plants.
Control measures are rarely necessary, as these spiders are generally beneficial for managing insect pests. If their presence becomes problematic in specific areas, the following management practices are recommended:
- Regular mowing of tall grasses along field margins.
- Removing weeds that serve as anchor points for web construction.
- Mechanical removal and destruction of egg cocoons during late autumn.
- Maintaining optimal spacing between crops to prevent large-scale web networking.
