Plane tree bug

The Plane tree bug, belonging to the genus Arocatus (family Rhyparochromidae), is a significant pest known for infesting trees of the genus Platanus. These hemipteran insects have become increasingly common in urban landscapes, where they often appear in large numbers, causing both ecological and aesthetic issues.

The biology of Arocatus is closely linked to its host plant's life cycle. Adults and nymphs feed on the sap and seeds of the plane tree, utilizing their specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts. This feeding process can cause premature leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and general physiological stress to the tree, especially during periods of drought or heavy infestation.

The life cycle typically involves overwintering as adults in protected environments. Common hibernation sites include deep crevices in tree bark, piles of leaf litter, and even crevices in nearby building facades. With the onset of spring temperatures, they emerge to mate and lay eggs, starting a new cycle that often sees population peaks in mid-to-late summer.

Damage caused by these insects is characterized by a decline in overall tree vitality. While direct lethal damage to mature trees is rare, the stress induced by infestation makes the host more susceptible to secondary diseases. Additionally, these bugs are considered a nuisance pest because they are known to swarm in residential areas when searching for overwintering sites.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to reduce population levels.
