Plane tree bug

The Arocatus longiceps is a species of true bug belonging to the Lygaeidae family. It is increasingly recognized as a significant pest specifically targeting plane trees (Platanus), causing concern among arborists and urban forestry professionals across its growing geographic range.

The insect feeds primarily on the sap of its host tree. By piercing the plant tissues with its specialized mouthparts, Arocatus longiceps extracts vital nutrients from leaves, succulent stems, and developing fruit clusters. This feeding activity disrupts the tree's metabolic processes and weakens its overall structural and physiological health.

Regarding its biology, the species typically completes one or two generations per year. Adults survive the winter months by sheltering under loose tree bark, in leaf litter, or in crevices of buildings near host trees. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to feed, mate, and deposit eggs to initiate the seasonal life cycle.

The damage caused by this pest is most evident during the summer months. Infested trees often display symptoms of chlorosis, premature leaf abscission, and stunted growth. In urban environments, the mere presence of large clusters of these bugs on trunks and branches can also become a nuisance to the public, although their primary impact remains on the tree's vitality.

To effectively manage populations of Arocatus longiceps, several cultural and chemical strategies are recommended:

• Removal of loose, exfoliating bark on tree trunks to eliminate winter shelters.
• Rigorous sanitation by collecting and composting fallen leaves where nymphs may reside.
• Targeted application of approved insecticides during the early nymphal stages to prevent population explosions.
• Regular health inspections of urban trees to detect early signs of infestation and apply spot treatments.
