Plane tree bug

Systematic position: Arocatus melanocephalus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. This species is a specific pest that primarily infests trees of the genus Platanus, commonly known as plane trees, which are widely used in urban landscaping.

Affected plants and damage: The primary food source for this bug is the seeds of plane trees. By feeding on the internal content of the fruit heads, the insects significantly reduce seed viability. In cases of massive infestations, these bugs migrate from the trees to nearby structures, causing nuisance issues for people, even though they do not cause structural damage to buildings or pose a health threat.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as tree bark crevices, dry leaf litter, or crevices in human constructions. With the arrival of spring, they emerge from diapause to mate and deposit eggs within the developing seed heads of the plane trees. The nymph stages feed throughout the season before maturing into adults.

Nature of damage and significance: The economic and ecological impact is most notable in tree nurseries where seeds are harvested. The bug's feeding habits destroy the embryo of the seed, preventing germination. Furthermore, in urban settings, massive congregations of bugs on tree trunks can be aesthetically displeasing and cause significant public concern during the late summer and autumn months.

Control measures: Managing Arocatus melanocephalus requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies:

• Regular collection and destruction of fallen fruit heads to eliminate the overwintering population.
• Targeted insecticide applications during the early nymph stage to reduce overall population density.
• Use of sticky traps or physical barriers on tree trunks to prevent migration.
• Sanitary pruning of infested tree parts to reduce the available habitat for the pest.
