Artona (Latin: Artona) is a genus of moths belonging to the family Zygaenidae (burnet moths). These insects are known in agricultural settings as pests that primarily affect foliage. While the adult moths feed on nectar, the larval stage is responsible for significant damage to cultivated plants, particularly in viticulture and silviculture.
The damage is caused exclusively by the caterpillars (larvae). These larvae have specific feeding preferences and typically target the leaf tissue of their host plants. The presence of the pest is often detected by the characteristic skeletal appearance of leaves, as the larvae consume the parenchyma while leaving the stronger veins intact.
The life cycle of Artona follows a holometabolous pattern, consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Overwintering typically occurs in the pupal stage, often encased in silken cocoons attached to the bark of trees or hidden in plant debris. The emergence of adults correlates with warming temperatures in late spring, marking the start of the primary infestation period.
