Grape leaf skeletonizer (Artona martini)
Artona martini
Description
The Artona martini, commonly known as a type of grape leaf skeletonizer, is an insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Zygaenidae. As a specialized feeder, it focuses its life cycle on Vitis species. This pest is a critical concern for vineyard managers due to its potential to rapidly defoliate vines during the growing season.
The host plants primarily include commercial grape varieties. The larvae are the stage responsible for causing direct economic damage. By consuming the green tissue of the leaves, they limit the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, which directly impacts vine vigor, berry development, and the long-term health of the vineyard infrastructure.
Regarding its biology and life cycle, Artona martini undergoes complete metamorphosis. The overwintering stage usually consists of larvae sheltered in robust cocoons located within the bark crevices of the vine trunk. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge, coinciding with the bud burst phase, to initiate feeding on the newly developing foliage.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by typical "skeletonization." They feed on the interveinal tissues of the leaves, leaving behind the network of veins, which eventually turn brown and wither. Severe infestations lead to significant loss of leaf area, reduced sugar accumulation in grapes, and compromised vine structure, making the plant more susceptible to environmental stress.
Effective management and protection strategies include:
- Regular monitoring of vine trunks during the dormant season to detect cocoons.
- Timely application of insecticides targeting the early larval stages when they are most vulnerable.
- Utilizing biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which is safer for beneficial vineyard insects.
- Good cultural practices, such as pruning and canopy management, to reduce microclimates favorable for the pest.
