Elcysma

Elcysma is a genus of moths belonging to the Zygaenidae family (burnet moths). These insects are part of the order Lepidoptera. The most prominent species, Elcysma westwoodii, is a significant agricultural pest known for its destructive impact on specific woody plant species in Eastern Asian regions.

The primary host plants for Elcysma species are members of the Rosaceae family. This includes fruit-bearing trees such as cherries, plums, apricots, and various ornamental flowering trees. The larvae are specialized foliage feeders and can cause widespread damage across orchards and decorative landscapes when their populations reach outbreak levels.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The overwintering stage typically occurs as larvae housed within protective cocoons attached to branches or bark crevices. In early spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young foliage, progressing through several instars before eventually pupating on the host tree.

The primary damage caused by Elcysma larvae is the rapid defoliation of the host plant. By consuming leaf tissue, the larvae severely reduce the plant's photosynthetic capacity. This damage is particularly harmful during the early growth season, leading to decreased vigor, impaired fruit development, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or winter damage.
