Grape leaf skeletonizer
Artona funeralis
Description
The Grape leaf skeletonizer (Artona funeralis) is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Zygaenidae. This species is known for its specialized feeding habits, specifically targeting grapevines and potentially causing extensive damage to commercial and home vineyards in affected regions.
The primary host for this pest is the grapevine. The larvae, or caterpillars, feed exclusively on the foliage. Their feeding activity is most intense during the vegetative stage, which can significantly stress the vines and impede the accumulation of sugars in the developing fruit clusters.
The life cycle of Artona funeralis includes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a larva within a silk cocoon, which is strategically hidden under loose bark or in debris at the base of the vine. Following pupation, the adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the underside of leaves to begin the next cycle.
The damage caused by this pest is characteristic and easily identifiable as "skeletonization." Young larvae graze on the leaf surface, while older larvae consume all leaf tissue except for the veins, giving the foliage a lace-like appearance. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and weakened vine health for subsequent seasons.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices, such as removing old bark and clearing vineyard debris, help reduce the overwintering population. Chemical control should be timed to target young larvae before they cause widespread leaf damage, ensuring the protection of the canopy during the critical ripening period.
- Removal of loose bark from vine trunks to destroy pupation sites.
- Sanitation in the vineyard to remove leaf litter during autumn.
- Monitoring adult flight patterns to determine optimal spray timing.
- Targeted application of insecticides to manage larval populations.
