Arvelius albopunctatus

Arvelius albopunctatus is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This pest is known for its distinctive appearance and its ability to cause significant damage to vegetable crops and ornamental plants in warmer climatic regions.

The diet of this pest mainly consists of Solanaceae and various other vegetable crops. These bugs feed on the sap of vegetative parts and fruits, which leads to stunted plant growth, leaf deformation, and a decline in the marketability of the harvested produce.

The life cycle of the species is typical for stink bugs, including the egg stage, five larval instars, and the adult stage. Females lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Under favorable conditions, the development of one generation occurs relatively quickly, allowing the pest to produce several generations per season.

The damage caused is characterized by discolored spots and necrosis at the sites where the insect has pierced the plant tissue with its proboscis. During periods of high infestation, flowers and ovaries may drop, and fruits lose their nutritional value and quality, rendering them unsuitable for storage or consumption.

Control measures involve cultural practices, such as the removal of reservoir weeds and deep plowing of the soil. In cases of severe infestation, contact and systemic insecticides are employed, provided that pre-harvest intervals are strictly observed to ensure food safety.
