Hornbeam whitefly

The Hornbeam whitefly (Asterobemisia carpini) is a small insect species belonging to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. Adult whiteflies are characterized by a delicate white appearance and wings covered with a powdery wax, while the immature larval stages are scale-like, sessile, and often difficult to distinguish on the underside of host plant leaves.

This pest primarily colonizes the common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), although it exhibits host plasticity by infesting other deciduous trees and shrubs, such as hazel and beech. The insect thrives in temperate climates, favoring environments where canopy density provides protection from direct sun and heavy winds, which are essential for maintaining the local humidity required for its development.

The life cycle of Asterobemisia carpini is complex, consisting of an egg stage, three larval instars, a puparium, and the adult stage. The species typically overwinters in the puparial stage attached to leaves. Emerging in the spring, adults begin a cycle of feeding and oviposition that can overlap throughout the summer, potentially leading to multiple generations in favorable seasons.

Damage is caused by both adults and, more significantly, the larvae, which pierce the leaf tissue to feed on sap. This process induces chlorosis and tissue necrosis. Severe infestations result in heavy leaf drop, reduced photosynthesis, and general decline of the tree's vigor. In forestry and ornamental landscapes, this can significantly impair the aesthetic and ecological value of the stands.

Management of this pest relies on a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Sanitation is the most critical cultural practice, involving the removal and destruction of leaf litter where puparia overwinter. When chemical control is deemed necessary, targeting the larval stages with systemic insecticides proves most effective, provided that applications are timed to minimize impact on beneficial predatory insects that inhabit the tree canopy.
