Systematic position: Atractomorpha belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Pyrgomorphidae. These insects are commonly known as slant-faced grasshoppers due to their distinctively conical heads. Unlike swarming locusts, they are typically sedentary but can cause significant localized damage to agricultural systems.
Host plants: This genus is a known polyphagous pest. They cause substantial damage to a variety of vegetable crops, including tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and cruciferous vegetables. Furthermore, they are frequently observed feeding on ornamental plants, young fruit tree saplings, and cereal crops like rice and maize during their vegetative stages.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females deposit egg pods in the soil, favoring moist environments. Nymphs go through several instars, feeding voraciously as they grow. The number of generations per year is largely determined by environmental temperatures and humidity, often peaking in the warmer months of the growing season.
Damage patterns and harmfulness: Atractomorpha feed primarily on leaves, creating large, irregular holes and eventually skeletalizing the foliage. Severe infestations can result in complete defoliation, which severely stunts plant growth and limits photosynthesis. They also attack reproductive parts, including buds and blossoms, which directly reduces fruit and seed yield.
Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach:
- Tilling the soil after harvest to expose and destroy overwintering egg pods.
- Maintaining field margins by clearing weeds that provide refuge and alternative food sources.
- Applying contact or systemic insecticides during early nymphal stages when insects are most vulnerable.
