Description
Systematic position. Poekilocerus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Pyrgomorphidae. These insects are distinguished by their often striking, warning coloration, which serves as an indicator of their toxicity to potential predators, as they can secrete noxious fluids when disturbed.
Affected crops and damage. This pest poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops, including cotton, legumes, and several ornamental shrubs. Both nymphs and adults are voracious feeders, consuming leaves, flower buds, and succulent stems, which leads to severe defoliation and a drastic reduction in the plant's overall photosynthetic capacity.
