Chinese cone-headed grasshopper

Systematic position. Atractomorpha sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese cone-headed grasshopper, is a member of the Pyrgomorphidae family within the order Orthoptera. These insects are distinguished by their uniquely elongated, conical heads and are widely recognized as significant pests in various agro-ecosystems across East and Southeast Asia.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Atractomorpha sinensis involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in the soil, which overwinter to hatch in the spring. Nymphs go through several instars, feeding voraciously on fresh vegetation throughout their development, which eventually leads to the emergence of reproductive adults.

Host plants. This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. The primary crops affected by this pest include:

• Vegetable crops such as tomatoes, eggplants, and various brassicas.
• Agricultural staples including rice, corn, and soybean fields.
• Diverse ornamental plants and grasses found in gardens and agricultural fringes.

Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs are active chewers. They consume leaves, stems, and sometimes delicate floral parts of the plants. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, which hampers plant photosynthesis, stunts growth, and can result in total crop failure if left unmanaged during the early growth stages of the plants.

Control measures. Effective management relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Cultural practices are paramount, including soil cultivation to disrupt egg pods and weeding to remove alternate host plants. Chemical control via approved insecticides is necessary during peak outbreak periods to minimize economic losses while adhering to environmental and food safety regulations.
