Leafcutter ants (genus Atta) are members of the order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. They are highly complex social insects native to the Americas, recognized globally for their sophisticated foraging behaviors and their symbiotic relationship with specialized fungi that they cultivate as a food source.

These pests pose a significant economic threat to a wide range of agricultural crops. They frequently attack citrus orchards, coffee plantations, fruit trees, vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. Their ability to defoliate entire trees in a short timeframe makes them one of the most destructive agricultural pests within their native range.

The biology of Atta species is centered on fungus farming. Worker ants cut fresh vegetation, which is not eaten directly but processed into a substrate to fertilize the fungal gardens inside their nests. A single colony can grow to contain millions of individuals, allowing them to exert massive pressure on the local vegetation.

The damage caused is characterized by distinctive semi-circular cuts on leaf margins, often leaving trees completely bare. The resulting defoliation significantly impairs plant photosynthesis, stunts growth, drastically reduces crop yield, and can eventually lead to the death of young seedlings and established trees alike.

Effective management requires targeting the entire colony, as controlling only the surface workers is insufficient.
