The Cuban leaf-cutter ant (Atta insularis) is a significant agricultural pest, primarily distributed across Cuba and the Caribbean region. Belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae, these ants are known for their complex social structure and unique dietary habits. Unlike typical herbivores, they cut and transport large quantities of leaf fragments to their nests to cultivate a specific fungus, which serves as their primary food source.

This species poses a severe threat to a wide variety of crops. Their preferred targets include citrus trees, coffee plants, cocoa, various vegetables, legumes, and numerous ornamental species. Because these ants forage in large numbers, a single colony can strip entire orchards or fields of their foliage within a single night, severely weakening the plants and causing substantial economic loss for agricultural producers.

The biology of Atta insularis is characterized by large, deep subterranean nests that can persist for many years. The colony operates through a caste system, consisting of queens, soldiers, and various types of workers responsible for foraging, waste management, and fungus maintenance. Their reproductive cycle involves mating flights, after which a newly mated queen establishes a fresh nest, carrying a starter culture of the essential fungus.

Damage caused by these ants is highly distinctive, characterized by semi-circular cuts on the edges of leaves. The resulting harm is twofold: physical removal of photosynthetic surface area and the general stress imposed on the host plant. Continuous defoliation disrupts the plant's metabolic processes, often leading to reduced vigor, lower fruit yield, or even the death of the plant if the infestation remains unchecked for an extended period.

Effective control requires targeting the entire colony, as treating individual foragers on the surface rarely solves the problem. Key management strategies include:

  • Using specialized toxic baits that workers transport into the nest to destroy the fungus and the queen.
  • Injecting fumigants directly into nest chambers to eliminate the population deep underground.
  • Employing biological control agents, such as specific fungi or nematodes that attack the colony.
  • Implementing physical barriers or trenching around valuable crops to prevent ant access during foraging.
