Taxonomic position: The Mexican leafcutter ant (Atta mexicana) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae, and subfamily Myrmicinae. It is a highly specialized species widely distributed throughout Mexico, known for its complex caste system and unique farming habits regarding fungi.

Biology and life cycle: These ants are obligate fungus-growers. They do not feed on leaves directly but use them as a substrate to cultivate a specific fungus within their elaborate subterranean nest systems. A mature colony can house millions of ants, with a single queen capable of sustaining the population for decades, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once established.

The pest poses a severe threat to diverse agricultural sectors, particularly citrus orchards, cereal crops, and broadleaf vegetable plantations. By systematically harvesting plant tissue, they can strip entire fields or nursery crops of their foliage, leading to profound economic losses in affected regions.

Damage and pest status: The primary injury is rapid and extensive defoliation. As ants cut away plant fragments, they disrupt the plant's metabolic capacity to produce energy, often leading to total yield loss or plant death. Furthermore, their expansive nest excavations can destabilize the topsoil and interfere with irrigation systems on commercial farms.

Control measures: Management of Atta mexicana must focus on the entire colony rather than individual foragers. Key strategies include:

• Application of bait-based pesticides that are carried by foragers deep into the nest to eliminate the queen and fungus garden.
• Direct fumigation of nest mounds to control large, established colonies.
• Physical exclusion techniques for young orchards or high-value plots.
• Integrated pest management (IPM) focusing on regular population monitoring and habitat modification.
