This insect is primarily recognized as a gall-forming pest that specifically targets plants of the genus Polygonum (knotweeds). Its life history is distinct because the larval stage is spent entirely inside specialized plant structures known as galls, which the insect induces upon infestation.

The host range of this pest primarily includes wild species of the Polygonaceae family. In agricultural environments, Augasma aeratella is often found in field margins and surrounding areas.
