Description
The clover casebearer (Coleophora frischella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Coleophoridae. It is recognized as a specialized pest that specifically targets legume crops, particularly red clover, often causing significant yield losses in seed production areas.
The larvae, known for their unique protective cases, feed primarily on the seeds of the clover plant. By burrowing into the developing flower heads, the larvae consume the internal parts of the seeds, which significantly reduces the quality and quantity of the harvestable clover seeds.
The life cycle of this species typically consists of one generation per year. Larvae overwinter inside their protective cases, hidden in soil debris or vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, they complete their development, pupate, and emerge as adult moths, which then lay eggs on the host plants' flowers.
Damage caused by the clover casebearer is often difficult to detect early in the season. The larvae use their silken cases to move along the plant, making it challenging for predators to reach them. Widespread infestation leads to empty pods and a substantial reduction in seed yield, which may only become apparent during the final stages of crop threshing.
