Pistachio case-bearer moth

The pistachio case-bearer moth (scientific name: Coleophora anatipennella) is a moth species belonging to the family Coleophoridae. Despite its common name, it is a polyphagous pest that affects a variety of orchard trees and shrubs, causing significant damage during the early spring development of host plants.

Common host plants include apple trees, pear trees, cherries, plums, and various wild species such as hawthorn and blackthorn. The larvae of this moth are well-known for their unique strategy of building portable cases out of silk and plant debris, which provide protection from predators and environmental factors throughout their larval stage.

The life cycle involves a single generation per year. The larvae overwinter in their cases attached to the bark of branches. When the buds begin to swell in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on the tender tissues, often boring directly into the buds, which inhibits the normal development of leaves and blossoms.

The damage caused by Coleophora anatipennella is most critical in early spring. Feeding activity results in bud destruction and skeletonization of leaves later in the season. Severe infestations can significantly reduce tree vigor, leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit set, causing economic losses in orchard management.
