Description
Whirligig beetle (lat. Aulanogyrus) is a genus of water beetles belonging to the family Gyrinidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are distinguished by their unique swimming patterns on the surface of freshwater bodies, often interacting with the aquatic environment where agricultural crops like rice are cultivated.
This pest can potentially damage aquatic and semi-aquatic plants. Although Aulanogyrus are primarily predatory, under high population densities, they may cause mechanical damage to leaves and stems, which weakens the plant's structural integrity and increases susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens prevalent in aquatic settings.
The life cycle of the beetle consists of several stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid in rows on submerged parts of host plants. The larvae are strictly aquatic and carnivorous, while the pupal stage occurs in specialized cocoons attached to the stems of aquatic plants above the water line or in the riparian zone.
The economic damage is primarily associated with tissue disruption and the subsequent entry of pathogens. When leaf integrity is compromised, the photosynthetic capacity of the plant decreases, leading to reduced growth rates and lower yield quality in susceptible aquatic crops, which requires vigilant monitoring during the peak infestation period.
Protection measures should focus on habitat management and cultural practices. This includes regular cleaning of irrigation canals, maintaining appropriate water levels to limit oviposition sites, and promoting natural predators. In cases of severe infestation, biological control agents can be deployed to manage populations without disrupting the aquatic ecosystem balance.
