Whirligig beetle

Whirligig beetle (lat. Orectochilus) is a genus of aquatic beetles belonging to the family Gyrinidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are easily recognizable by their rapid, erratic swimming patterns on the surface of freshwater bodies. Unlike many related species, the Orectochilus genus is largely nocturnal, preferring to hide in shaded riparian areas during daylight hours.

While not primary pests for terrestrial agriculture, they can become problematic in aquatic nurseries, botanical gardens, and rice paddies. In these environments, high population densities of Orectochilus can disrupt the health of aquatic plant systems, interfering with cultivation practices and causing localized physiological stress to submerged vegetation.

The life cycle of the Orectochilus consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs on the submerged parts of plants. The larval stage is exclusively predatory, living underwater and feeding on small invertebrates, while adults consume organic matter and small plankton from the surface, often grazing on young, fragile leaves of cultivated aquatic species.

The economic harm caused by these beetles is twofold. First, the mechanical damage caused by larvae during feeding can lead to necrosis of the plant tissue. Second, the adults may cause overcrowding on the water surface, which impedes the diffusion of oxygen and light penetration, both of which are critical for the photosynthesis of submerged aquatic crops.

Control measures primarily focus on integrated management. Preventing the buildup of stagnant water and excess vegetation is key to reducing oviposition sites. When chemical intervention is necessary, it must be performed with extreme caution using products that are specifically approved for aquatic use to ensure that the surrounding ecosystem and non-target species remain protected.
