Whirligig beetle

The whirligig beetle (lat. Gyrinus urinator) is a species within the family Gyrinidae and the order Coleoptera. These insects are well-known for their rapid, circular swimming patterns on the surface of freshwater bodies, including ponds, lakes, and irrigation channels adjacent to agricultural fields.

The biology of Gyrinus urinator involves a complete metamorphosis. The larval stage is aquatic and predatory, often hunting small invertebrates in the water column. Adult beetles possess specialized divided eyes that allow them to see both above and below the water surface simultaneously, providing an advantage in detecting prey and avoiding predators in their aquatic habitat.

Regarding agricultural and economic impact, these beetles are primarily viewed as pests in the context of aquaculture and fishery management.
