Axiagastus, specifically the species Axiagastus cambelli, is a significant insect pest belonging to the Pentatomidae family, commonly known as shield bugs or stink bugs. This insect is primarily recognized as a localized but severe pest of coconut palms in the Pacific islands and parts of Southeast Asia, causing substantial losses to local agricultural yields.

The host range of Axiagastus is centered on the coconut palm. Both nymphs and adults feed on the sap of inflorescences and developing coconut fruits. By piercing the tender tissues with their mouthparts, they drain essential nutrients, which leads to stunted growth and the eventual necrosis of affected plant parts.

The biology of this pest is adapted to high-humidity tropical environments. The life cycle involves several nymphal stages that feed concurrently with adults. Their reproductive strategy allows for rapid population surges, especially during dry spells or periods of floral abundance, which significantly increases the pressure on the plantation's fruit production.

The economic impact of Axiagastus is primarily observed through the premature shedding of young coconut nuts and the malformation of mature fruit. When the feeding occurs in high concentrations, the damage can prevent the palm from developing viable nuts, leading to significant drops in copra production and other coconut-based industries.

Management strategies focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Cultural practices, such as maintaining plantation hygiene, help reduce breeding sites for the bugs.
