African whitefly

The African whitefly (Bemisia afer) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. While often overshadowed by its relative, the tobacco whitefly, this species remains a major threat to agricultural productivity in numerous regions, consistently causing damage to various plant species by sapping their vigor.

This pest exhibits a broad host range, feeding on a wide variety of commercial crops. Key agricultural targets include citrus orchards, grapevines, and numerous vegetable crops such as tomatoes and eggplants. It can colonize both indoor greenhouse environments and open-field plantings, displaying high adaptability to different microclimatic conditions.

The life cycle of Bemisia afer involves egg, four nymphal stages, and the adult phase. The developmental speed is heavily influenced by environmental temperature; warmer weather significantly accelerates the reproductive process, leading to population explosions within a very short timeframe. Adults are mobile and capable of migrating between plants, facilitating the rapid spread of infestations.

Direct damage is caused by nymphs and adults extracting phloem sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and potential plant death in severe cases. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which prevents light from reaching the leaf surface and disrupts photosynthesis, ultimately resulting in reduced yields and diminished market quality.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM). Key actions include:

• Deploying yellow sticky traps to monitor adult flight activity and density.
• Applying systemic insecticides specifically labeled for whitefly control when thresholds are met.
• Promoting natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps, to keep populations under biological control.
• Maintaining strict greenhouse sanitation to eliminate potential hiding spots or host weeds.
• Using reflective mulches to deter the landing of adult whiteflies on young seedlings.
