Description
The Giffard whitefly (Bemisia giffardi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is a specialized pest primarily found in subtropical regions, where it poses a significant threat to the cultivation of various citrus species, most notably mandarins and oranges.
The primary hosts for this insect are citrus trees. The pests typically congregate on the underside of leaves, where they feed by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap. This constant drainage of nutrients significantly weakens the plant's metabolic processes and reduces its natural resistance to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.
The biology of the species follows a process of incomplete metamorphosis, including the egg, larval (nymphal), and adult stages. Adult whiteflies are highly prolific, allowing for rapid population growth under favorable warm and humid conditions. Reproduction can occur continuously throughout the year in controlled greenhouse environments.
Damage to the plant is characterized by chlorotic spotting on leaves, premature leaf drop, and stunted shoot growth. Furthermore, Bemisia giffardi excretes honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blackens the leaf surfaces and fruit, severely hindering photosynthesis and reducing the overall market value and quality of the harvest.
Control strategies involve an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
