Description
The tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is a serious sap-sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests due to its polyphagous nature and its exceptional ability to develop resistance to various chemical insecticides.
This pest infests a broad spectrum of host plants, exceeding 600 species. Its primary targets include essential vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as various field crops like cotton and a wide array of ornamental plants grown in both greenhouse and open-field environments.
The life cycle consists of the egg, three larval instars, puparium, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, particularly in warm climates or greenhouses, the life cycle is completed in as little as three weeks. The overlapping generations allow for rapid population explosions that can overwhelm crops in a very short period.
Damage is twofold: direct injury caused by sap extraction, leading to chlorosis and plant wilting, and indirect damage via the excretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. Most critically, Bemisia tabaci is a highly efficient vector for numerous plant viruses, notably the Geminiviruses, which cause significant yield losses worldwide.
