Description
The genus Blattella, specifically Blattella germanica, is a member of the order Blattodea and the family Ectobiidae. Although widely known as a household pest, in agricultural settings like commercial greenhouses and storage facilities, it acts as a secondary pest capable of causing significant damage to delicate crop tissues and seedlings.
The German cockroach is omnivorous and opportunistic. It feeds on young sprouts, flower buds, and soft fruits, often targeting plants in high-humidity environments. Their presence is frequently associated with extensive tissue damage, which serves as an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal infections, ultimately undermining the health of the entire crop.
The biological cycle of this insect involves incomplete metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female carries an ootheca, which protects the eggs until they are ready to hatch. This reproductive strategy, combined with the ideal microclimate of greenhouses (constant warmth and humidity), allows populations to explode in size, making them difficult to eradicate once established.
Economic damage stems from direct feeding and environmental contamination. By moving across the substrate and foliage, these cockroaches carry pathogens and leave behind secretions that negatively impact the marketability of vegetables and flowers. Early detection is critical, as they are nocturnal and tend to hide in cracks, crevices, or underneath nursery trays.
