Description
The German cockroach, scientifically known as Blattella germanica, belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Ectobiidae. While primarily recognized as a domestic pest, in agricultural settings like commercial greenhouses, it acts as a significant threat to seedlings and sensitive plant tissues.
This species frequently damages greenhouse vegetables, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, as well as ornamental flowering plants. They feed on tender leaves, flower buds, and young stems, leaving behind irregular gnaw marks that severely impact plant development and marketability.
The lifecycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females carry an ootheca (egg case) until nymphs are ready to hatch, which contributes to high survival rates. In the warm and humid climate of a greenhouse, the population grows rapidly without seasonal interruptions.
The primary damage is caused by feeding, but the cockroach also serves as a vector for pathogens. By moving across the foliage, they spread bacteria and fungal spores via their waste products, which can trigger secondary infections in plants that have already been weakened by mechanical damage.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. It is essential to remove decaying plant debris and organic matter that provide food and shelter. The use of insecticide baits, sticky monitoring traps, and targeted applications of non-phytotoxic chemicals are standard practices for keeping population levels below the economic threshold.
