Description

The Pharaoh mussel (Brachidontes pharaonis) is an invasive bivalve mollusk native to the Indo-Pacific region. Since its introduction into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, it has become a prolific invasive species known for causing severe biofouling in water-based infrastructure and industrial systems.

Systematic classification: the species belongs to the order Mytilida and the family Mytilidae. While it is not a direct pest of agricultural crops, it acts as a significant infrastructure pest by impeding water transport systems that are essential for large-scale agricultural irrigation and aquaculture farms.

The biology and lifecycle of this mussel are marked by high reproductive output and rapid growth. Its planktonic larvae are easily distributed by water currents, allowing the species to quickly colonize pipes, pumping stations, and irrigation channels, where they can survive in high-density colonies.

The damage caused by these mollusks is primarily mechanical. By forming dense layers inside pipes, they reduce the cross-sectional area for water flow, leading to clogging of filtration systems and pumps. This causes water supply shortages in fields, which directly impacts crop health and production yields in irrigated areas.

Control measures and mitigation strategies involve physical maintenance, such as scraping or pressure-washing the infrastructure to remove colonies. Additionally, the application of non-toxic anti-fouling coatings and the use of chemical oxidation treatments in water systems are common practices to prevent larvae from settling on critical surfaces.
