The Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia, order Mytilida, and family Mytilidae. While economically significant in aquaculture, it is recognized as a major pest in agricultural engineering, specifically responsible for the extensive biofouling of water infrastructure.
The primary agricultural infrastructure impacted includes irrigation pipelines, water distribution channels, pumping stations, and filtration units. These structures provide the mussels with a steady flow of nutrient-rich water, allowing them to establish dense colonies that are difficult to eradicate once they have attached to the pipe interiors.
The biological cycle starts with the larval stage, known as the veliger, which travels with the water current until it finds a suitable surface to settle on. Once attached via strong byssal threads, the mussels begin to grow rapidly. Their ability to survive in a wide range of water conditions allows them to quickly colonize industrial systems, forming heavy, encrusted layers.
Damage is characterized by significant physical obstruction, which severely limits water flow and increases friction within pipes. This leads to increased energy costs for pumping water, blockage of irrigation nozzles, and potential mechanical failure of pumps. Furthermore, the buildup of decomposing organic matter inside the pipes can contaminate water quality.
Management and protection measures involve a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies. Key methods include:
- Installing high-efficiency intake screens to block larvae.
- Periodic high-pressure mechanical cleaning of pipes.
- Using non-toxic anti-fouling coatings.
- Implementing automated water treatment systems (chlorination or UV).
