The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) is an invasive bivalve mollusk belonging to the family Mytilidae. Native to Southeast Asia, this species has become a global environmental concern, significantly affecting industrial and agricultural infrastructure by colonizing freshwater bodies and artificial waterways.

In an agricultural context, this mollusk is classified as an infrastructure pest. It does not attack crops directly; instead, it targets the critical infrastructure necessary for modern farming, such as irrigation pipes, water intake structures, and canal systems, causing severe disruptions to water supply chains.

The life cycle of the golden mussel is highly opportunistic. It involves a planktonic larval stage (veliger) that allows the pest to spread through moving water. Once these larvae attach to a solid surface, they transform into adults that can form dense, multi-layered colonies, which are extremely resilient to environmental fluctuations.

Damage occurs through biofouling, where thousands of mussels accumulate inside pipes and valves, reducing flow diameter and capacity. This leads to increased pressure in irrigation systems, pump motor failure, and significant irrigation downtime, which can ultimately cause yield losses due to interrupted water delivery to fields.

Control strategies for the golden mussel involve a multi-layered approach to prevent colonization. Key methods include physical filtration of water intakes, the use of ultrasound to deter larval attachment, and targeted chemical treatments like chlorination within closed circuits. Preventive maintenance and regular monitoring of water flow rates are essential for early detection.
