Description

Mussels of the genus Mytilus (family Mytilidae) act as technical pests within agricultural irrigation infrastructure. While they do not directly feed on crops, their ability to colonize water conveyance systems poses a significant threat to efficient water management and crop production.

These bivalve mollusks settle within irrigation pipes, canals, and water intake screens. Their presence significantly restricts water flow, leading to unequal distribution of moisture across fields and potentially causing complete blockages that stop the irrigation process during critical growth stages of crops.

The biology of Mytilus is characterized by a planktonic larval stage (veliger). These larvae can travel long distances via water currents, entering pumping stations and irrigation systems. Once they attach to a hard substrate using their byssal threads, they grow into dense colonies that are difficult to remove.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical and operational. Mussels clog filters, damage sprinkler nozzles, and interfere with pump mechanics, leading to increased maintenance costs and potential crop failure due to irrigation system downtime. The physiological stress caused to plants by insufficient water supply is the ultimate harmful effect of these infestations.

Effective control strategies focus on preventing colonization and removing existing biomass:

  • Periodic mechanical cleaning of canals and pipes.
  • Application of approved molluscicides in water supply systems.
  • Installation of ultrasound devices to inhibit larval settlement.
  • Design of irrigation systems with anti-fouling coatings and advanced filtration.
